2006 - 2007 Essay Contest
The Goodlark
Educational Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of
its 2006-2007 essay contest. The subject upon
which the essay contributors wrote this year was What
Event of the Last 100 Years Has Changed the World the Most?
The winning paper, entitled "Nuclear Development," was
submitted by Chris Barber of Waverly Central High School.
In his essay, Chris discussed both the political and the
sociological impact that the development of nuclear weapons
has had upon the world. Chris received a plaque and a
$1,000 scholarship.

At the presentation of the award for the winning essay were
(left to right): Mr. Richard Rawlings, WCHS principal, Mrs.
Michelle Puckett, Chris' English teacher, Vanessa Smyth,
Goodlark Educational Foundation Executive Director and Chris
Barber, first place winner.

The second
place essay was written by Jonathan Martin from Creek
Wood High School, who received a plaque and a $500
scholarship. His essay was entitled "National Debt,"
and in it Jonathan discussed the changing views about
government debt throughout America's history and the
ramifications for our present and future.

Third
prize, consisting of a plaque and a $250 scholarship, was
won by Rachel Reasonover of Hickman County High School.
Rachel's essay was entitled "A New Age of Warfare." In
it, Rachel described the physical effects of the detonation
of the atomic bombs dropped in World War II and speculated
that today's bombs would cause even more catastrophic
destruction.

This is the
second year that the Goodlark Foundation has held an essay
contest for the 11th graders in Dickson, Hickman and
Humphreys Counties (2005-2006
winners). The Foundation holds this contest
annually, so eleventh graders
should watch for contest advertisements in the fall.
