Essay Contest
The 2009-2010 essay contest for high school juniors is now over and the winners are in! This year's topic was "What event of the last one thousand years would you have liked to witness and why?" It wasn't easy, but our three-judge panel chose the following winners from forty-nine entries:

First place and winner of a $1,000 scholarship was Jordan Murphy of Hickman County High School. Jordan wrote about the national struggle for womens' right to vote, culminating in 1920 with Tennessee's approval of the Ninetenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by one vote.

Second place and winner of a $500 scholarship was Brennan Hicks of McEwen High School. Brennan's passion for art led him to wish he could have seen Michelangelo's last brushstroke of the Sistine Chapel.

The third place winner, Courtney Henley of Hickman County HIgh School, would have liked to witness the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Courtney admired the signers because they stood up for what they believed, even at great personal risk. Courtney will receive a $250 scholarship.

Thanks to all participants for their great essays! Watch for next year's contest in the fall of 2010.
